Canadian seeking work in US
Checkedin @ 11 St Joseph St, don't park on street very long.
Booking agent said she didn't receive my fax reservation but she had
my Visa #, no Discovery in CA, when I asked she admitted her Outlook
eat it, she found it later in the trash bin, promised to get me to Rosemont Yorkville
either on the 18 or 23 Sep...but they did give me a
1 bedroom @ John Street for the
bachelor suite price. She was
also helpful, acting as a navigator via my cell.
Don't ever drive down Yonge, always busy.
Bought tokens for Yonge subway, explored Front St, West to find where Intellon building
was located (3 floor over Jack Astor). Wow - Sunday and lots of people around. Buses,
cars, trolleys, trains and Subway.
- Aug 31 - Monday - Start new 6 week contract (ends up 4 months)
Intellon (ITLN) - 'no new wires'
144 Front St West
Toronto, Ca
Head Office is in Ocala, FL
Enable home computers and HD multi-media to network, 400Mbs over PowerLine...just
plug their Ethernet to powerline adapter in the wall and go. They have shipped 30M
Integrated circuits, mostly to Europe, Japan...might be a stock to watch. Ideal to
add Internet access to buildings where someone else owns the wires.
For you technies: Intellon hired 4 contractors to write test firmware modules to run
in an ARM11, ARMulator software model to provide the hardware HDL, Verilog RTL
tests to run, that verify the Hardware works and agrees with the Software model, also
to co-develop the Application Firmware. Hired because: Firmware, ASIC test, passport
Actual need: Perforce, C++, Code Warrior, Visual Studio, Ethernet, NOC
NOC: Network on chip - DMA packets between blocks
An International bunch - I worked with a Etab, Vlad, Valdo, Shirpad, Nozar, all
great bunch of guys. Be sure to get a pointer to the H/W, S/W, project web site.
My "Suite", near the University (some blue hair people around) is 2 blocks from
the subway ($6/day) then 2 blocks to work (10 miles-?kM). Grocery store 1/2 block
behind my place. The subway is not bad, not crowed on off hours and fast, 20 minutes.
My boss travels 100Km, part car, part Go-train. Intellon lab is located in the heart of
the city because "it's easy for everyone to get there".
First day waited in hall for 1/2 hour, no receptionist, tailgated in behind an employee.
We were issued access cards later, also needed to get back in morning and back from
bath room.

stayed here 2 months:
Rosemont Residences Theater District
2 blks to Wellesley station, off at Front St, 2 block to Intellon
50 John street
416-340-1221
stayed here 2 months:
Rosemont Yorkville,
3 blocks walk to Intellon
11 St Joseph St
Toronto, ON M2Y 3G4
416-413-1778
Rosemont web site
Marriot next store to Yorkville, didn't check out
Doug Olsen(Fl) stayed in a place in Chinatown ($80/night) didn't have a car
James Osborn(Ky) stayed in Mississauga ($70/night) and took the GO train($10/day)
to work plus a gym membership, ocassionally had to pay parking.
Parking was $6/hr or $20/day.
Food
Subway couple days a week $7
Food Courts 3 blocks underground in every direction, closed on weekends, great varity
New York style deli, couple times a month, block north of King at Peter.
Grocery story was a couple blocks away from either place.
Lunch truck out front of Intellon, hamburger, pollish or german sasage, home
made fries with drink $5.
Tim Horton had a good breakfast sandwich $3 and donuts.
One felt safe walking through town, even the alies. A few pan-handlers on the way
to work...I think mostly the Americans would donate. You could tell which evenings
were hockey night, but Maple Leaf tickets were like gold to get.
Got computers setup for us, now we can start work. The computers were really slow
so we networked into the window servers or Linux compute array. The Hardware guys
had a test plan layed out for us.

Free Lunch - Jack Astor had a free barbecue for the whole building. Great
burger, potato salad, shrimp and Haaden Daz.ca for dessert, yum! One of the
few times we visited a sitdown restraunt.
- Sept 5 Saturday - Labor Day weekend explore the town a bit
cereal, framboies(raspberries), blueberries, and Lait (milk) every morning
Washed dishes - dishwasher in suite
Washed clothes - washer/dryer in suite
Dislikes:
o big bed, yet comfortable, makes it hard to get around to computer desk
o I would prefer carpet over the hardwood floors
o Lazyboy needed (couchs are not comfortable to lie on to watch tv)
o need coffee grinder (not buying one for $44) blender sortof works
(missed the blender in the grocery store)
Decided to see if car would start after a week of rest (battery mysterious
dead a week ago in driveway), travel to north side of Toronto:
Cellistica (closed Fort Collins, now Intel) - Eglinton Ave - a huge plant here
Leeside - Bayview & Davisville Ave
got haircut, barber shop ($19)
visited 2 tennis appeal stores, 2 tennis courts
Yorkdale Mall - 401 & Dufferin - hateit
mostly shoes, clothes, should have never left Sears
Apple store - busiest, hands on iPod, iTouch (should buy AAPL? stock)
Air Show this weekend - saw jets in formation fly over my place
Monday is labor day holiday for Canada.
Went back to the Leeside tennis club. Hit and Played 2 hrs with Marty, Aaron,
Helen (Chinese) and Amanda (Eskimo) mostly just hitting then I showed them
how to rotate 5 server out game. They all had a good sense of humor, spoke
good English, alot of fun. Marty said there was a round robin Friday, 7:00.
I said any beer? Helen said "Chinese don't drink beer"
Stopped maybe 5 min for a subway, got parking ticket on Bayview ($30), not
sure why! Will they catch up with a car from Colorado?
Stopped at the "Beer Store", bought 12 pack LaBatt Blue Light 4% ($24)
Would have been a good weekend to see folks in Ottawa, but I needed to
get `ooute and aboote` and drive the city a bit.
One of the guys at Intellon said they have 8-10 mixed 5.0 teams league play
in the summer, but The indoor winter play is pretty expensive.
News: Intellon is bought by Atheros - stock is now $7, was $5 last week
when I only thought about buying :^(
For lunch I went to Burger King in the food court, had Poutin (for you Yanks: french fries,
brown gravy and curds) and a fish sandwich, The Poutin was good, fish not so much.
They didn't have the $1 value deals.
Found a dropin round-robin tennis at Leeside 7:00-10:00. My only exercise for the week!
Seems like the Chinese folks are friendly, good personality, speak good English and have good
ole American first names. Both places I stayed had an exercise room I did get around to using.
Trying to get VPN to Intellon , inorder to work from my suite, which we did
get setup to get a remote desktop to check on simulation in the evenings and
on weekends. The building was locked on weekends and only excessible if
an Intellon employee is there.
Wow - discovered on the roof top (19 floor) a workout room, spa, barbecues
- Sep 24 - Thursday - 6:10PM - Rejeanne Denver to Ottawa
She flew through Toronto, picked her up there, instead of waiting for here connection...We
spent the night at my place and drove to Ottawa Saturday. Rejeanne's nursing re-union
was a blast, picked up an apple pie on the way to a pot luck, stayed with her sister...toured
the governer's mansion on sunday. Those nurses sure like their wine.
- Oct 9 - Friday - 6 weeks of work Done. It only rained 3-4 times and the snow flew
the day before we left. I drove Doug to Cleveland to see his parents for a tank of gas. I
continued to Louisville to visit with my Dad a couple days before heading back to Fort Collins.
I was familiar with
Cincinnatti, so I make sure I hit a Bob Evans for supper but a Skyline Chili
or White Castle would work as alternates.
The cost of living in Toronto seems to be roughly 150% of Fort Collins. Even at $65/hr
I'm not sure how much I'm ahead. My place, somewhat upscale, is $700/week. In
Cincinnati I had a reasonable place for $200/week. English mostly spoken here, I didn't
hear much French spoken.
- Visual Minorities census will be 52% by 2017 (means whites will be minority?)

Cute Girls - 2%
I don't think the muslums have taken over here yet.
